Beginner’s Guide to SEO: This is How SEO Works
Nowadays, people are getting used to hearing the term “SEO”, the short term for “Search Engine Optimisation”, especially those who are “living” in the business world. Many business owners try to learn more about SEO through SEO consultation, because of its importance in improving a business. So, what is SEO?
SEO is a process to improve or boost a website’s visibility by optimising the website, so that it can rank high in search results. Business owners use the services to help increase their brand awareness. When people search for something they want to buy on, let’s say, Google, the first thing they will click after seeing the search results is, of course, the result that appears in the first part, right? Yes, business owners are striving toward that goal. For that reason, the people in the business world cannot ignore the power of SEO. So, how does SEO work?
The major functions in search engines are crawling and indexing – providing users with a list of the relevant websites based on what they are searching for. Of course, in order to make it easier for search engines to do these functions, your website should qualify in terms of its responsiveness and quality based on the search engines guidelines. While there are many search engines out there, in this article, we are going to show you how SEO works according to Google.
Crawling
Crawling is the process that Google does to find information about web pages on the internet. For example, you have a new website, but before your website can appear in the search results, first Google has to make sure your website “exists”, and in order to know that, they sends its spider crawler to explore the internet and find your website. Once it finds your website, it will immediately “crawl” around your website, “read” your content and follow all the links available on the web pages, so that all the data and the information it get from your website can be sent to Google’s server. After this process is done, it will lead to Google indexing, which will be explained below.
Indexing
Indexing is the process of organising the data and the information sent by the crawler. In this process, Google collects the web pages resulted from the crawling process to index them accordingly. That way, when people, let’s say, search for “the best hairdryer”, Google can provide the results that are more relevant to the keyword “the best hairdryer”. Therefore, indexing is the process of categorising web pages with certain keywords based on the information in those web pages. In SEO, setting title tag, heading, and meta description, etc is important, because with this process, the web pages on your website can be indexed for the categories of the keywords that you need.
That’s the basic knowledge you should know about SEO. Search engines provide answers to the users who look for accurate information about something they basically need. Therefore, if you have something they need, you have to provide content that has all the information of that “something”, so that Google will index it accordingly, in order for them to find your content. For that reason, the more relevant your content is, the higher the chance to rank high on Google. So, what are you waiting for?
